I’m Good…

We’ve all have said some variation of, “I’m good” on the regular.

In many situations, saying, “I’m good” is exactly what needs to be said. It’s the perfect response to…

“Would you like milk with your coffee?”
“I’m good.”

“Would you like fries with your order?”
“Nah, I’m good.”

“Honey, thank you for helping me with the garden. Did you need to take a break?”
“I’m good.”

“I’ve got a little sum’ ting special for yah in the bedroom…”
“I’m good. Maybe later.”

But in other situations, it’s coded language for stay away.

“I’m good”, has to be one of the most efficient survival strategies to keep people away from our most vulnerable parts. I know it’s been true in my life. And I know it’s very true in our group circles. I hear it every week and in most coaching sessions I have particularly with men.

“I’m good” is short-form for I’m ok being here with you being over there. It operates like an emotional shield to keep our feelings down and not allow others in. And it can be overused to the point it stops us from growing up and prevents deeper connections with others.

Next time, you hear yourself saying, “I’m good”, ask yourself “am I really good?” There’s probably something behind it that works looking at.

Much love and mad respect,
Charles
